Quick answer: The best hot pools in Queenstown are the private cedar tubs at Onsen Hot Pools in Arthurs Point (from NZ$122 for one person or NZ$180 for two, per hour). For a full hot-and-cold circuit, The Bathhouse in town is NZ$99 for 60 minutes. For a day spa, Body Sanctum on Athol Street (one-hour massage NZ$175 full price) and The Spa at Millbrook in Arrowtown (60-minute massage NZ$189) are the standouts. Book direct; prices checked October 2026.
People search for “hot springs Queenstown” expecting something like Rotorua or Hanmer. It helps to know up front that there are no natural geothermal hot springs in or around Queenstown. What Queenstown does have is a small group of heated-water operators: private tubs with a view, a European-style bathhouse, a riverside sauna, and a handful of day spas. If it’s natural thermal water you’re after, our guide to the best hot pools in NZ covers the geothermal options, the nearest South Island ones being Hanmer Springs and Maruia.

Onsen Hot Pools: The Queenstown Classic
Onsen Hot Pools & Day Spa is at 160 Arthurs Point Road, about 10 minutes’ drive from central Queenstown. Its cedar tubs sit in private rooms high above the Shotover River, each with a retractable roof so you can soak open to the sky or covered up when it snows. You get the room to yourselves for 60 minutes, which includes changing time. Onsen says plainly that it isn’t trying to be a traditional Japanese hot spring, despite the name. The water is heated to about 38°C, and the views are the point.
There are three soak-only options:
- Original Onsen (up to four people): NZ$122 for one, NZ$180 for two, NZ$225 for three, NZ$260 for four. Children aged 5 to 11 can come before 5pm (last booking 4:45pm) for NZ$30 each with a paying adult.
- Oval Onsen (one or two people): smaller, more minimal cedar tubs. NZ$127 for one, NZ$185 for two.
- Tri-Bathing (one or two people): a private eucalyptus steam shower, a hot tub with hydrotherapy jets, then a cold plunge. NZ$137 for one, NZ$195 for two.
Onsen is open 9am to 11pm every day, with the last pool booking at 10pm. Soak and spa packages pair a 45-minute soak with a treatment in a private spa room. There is a complimentary shuttle, but you have to request it when you book. You need 24 hours’ notice to change or cancel, or you pay the full price. Onsen’s FAQ page quotes slightly lower Original Onsen prices than its pricing table, so check the final figure at checkout.
Which tub? For a couple, the Oval Onsen is the more intimate choice for NZ$5 more than the Original. Tri-Bathing is the pick if you’ve been skiing or tramping and want the hot-cold routine. Our contrast therapy guide explains what the research says about that.
The Bathhouse: A Hot-and-Cold Circuit in Town
The Bathhouse at 35 Brecon Street, a short walk up from the lake towards the gondola, is a European-style bathhouse. Inside a travertine building there are hot and cold pools, saunas, infrared saunas and a steam room. You move through them at your own pace. It’s phone-free (your phone goes in a locker), adults only (18+), and it doesn’t do massages or facials. It is just bathing.
A 60-minute session is NZ$99 per person. A 90-minute session is NZ$119 for one person, with the per-person price dropping for bigger groups (down to NZ$79 each). Towels, refreshments and toiletries are included. It’s open 9am to 9:30pm daily. If you’re curious about the infrared rooms, our piece on infrared sauna benefits goes through the evidence.
Wellspace: Riverside Sauna and Cold Plunge
Wellspace runs a wood-fired barrel sauna for eight on the banks of the Kawarau River. You do 15-minute rounds at 80 to 100°C, then cool off in the river itself, a 1 to 4°C ice bath, or a cold shower, with a heated marquee and a bonfire to rest by. The 75-minute community session is the cheapest option in this guide, from NZ$35 per person plus a booking fee. Private sessions start from NZ$360 plus a booking fee. Bring two towels (or hire them for NZ$4 each). A river plunge is not for everyone. Our cold plunge guide covers how to do it safely.
Best Day Spas in Queenstown
Body Sanctum, central Queenstown
Body Sanctum has been at Level 1, 10 Athol Street since 1999, and it lists New Zealand’s Best Day Spa at the 2025 World Spa Awards among its awards. It is the easiest choice if you’re staying in town and want a massage after a day on the mountain. Its own site lists a 60-minute mindfulness facial at NZ$175. Its one-hour massage is NZ$175 at full price on Bookme, with off-peak slots sometimes cheaper.
The Spa at Millbrook, Arrowtown
The Spa at Millbrook is inside Millbrook Resort on Malaghans Road, about 20 minutes from Queenstown and close to Arrowtown. It’s a calmer setting than town. Its treatment menu lists a Signature Massage at NZ$189 for an hour or NZ$259 for 90 minutes, and one-hour facials from NZ$205. Combine it with lunch in Arrowtown for an easy half day.
The Spa at Coronet Ridge, Arthurs Point
The Spa at Coronet Ridge is inside the five-star Coronet Ridge Resort at 146 Arthurs Point Road, just along from Onsen. Treatments run 10am to 7pm, Wednesday to Sunday, and use Corbin Road, a New Zealand skincare brand. You can add Thermal Sanctuary access, two hours in the resort’s indoor heated pool, sauna and steam room, before or after your treatment. Prices are in its downloadable menu rather than on the page, so check when booking.

Where to Stay
Where you stay decides which of these you can walk to. Arthurs Point puts you next to Onsen and Coronet Ridge but means driving into town. Central Queenstown puts The Bathhouse and Body Sanctum on foot. Arrowtown is the quiet option, with Millbrook on the doorstep.
- Coronet Ridge Resort, Arthurs Point. A five-star resort a minute’s drive from Onsen, with Shotover River views, select suites with outdoor baths, and a pool, hot tubs and sauna for in-house guests (open 6am to 10pm). It’s the best base for a soak-and-spa trip. Check Coronet Ridge on Expedia.
- Millbrook Resort, Arrowtown. A golf resort on Malaghans Road with The Spa at Millbrook on site and Arrowtown a few minutes away. Check Millbrook on Expedia.
- Central Queenstown, any budget. Town has everything from hostels to lakefront hotels, and staying central means you can walk to The Bathhouse and Body Sanctum. Compare Queenstown hotels on Expedia.
When to Go and How to Book
Every venue in this guide works on bookings, not walk-ins, and Queenstown is busy in both the ski season and the summer holidays. Book Onsen first, as it has a fixed number of tubs and the evening slots are the ones everyone wants. The Bathhouse and Wellspace are easier to get into midweek.
Winter is the best season for a hot soak. An Onsen tub with the roof open in falling snow is the obvious winter treat, and a sauna after a ski day makes sense. Summer suits Wellspace, when a river plunge is bracing rather than brutal, and the long evenings make a late soak at Onsen easy. If you only have time for one thing, book a late-afternoon Onsen soak so you catch the light changing on the Shotover gorge. For more ideas, see our guide to wellness experiences in NZ.
The Bottom Line
For the classic Queenstown hot pool experience, book Onsen Hot Pools: NZ$180 for two for an hour in a private cedar tub above the Shotover. If you’d rather have a full hot-and-cold circuit and don’t need privacy, The Bathhouse at NZ$99 for 60 minutes is better value and walkable from town. On a budget, Wellspace’s NZ$35 community sauna is hard to beat. For a massage, Body Sanctum is the easy central pick and Millbrook is the calmer one. And if you want a whole weekend of it, stay at Coronet Ridge and walk between your room, its spa and Onsen.
